1470 AST Soundboard Pickup.  For 2008 the 1470 AST pickup has had the corners rounded-off. The rounded  corners make it easier for the AST to fit in tighter places, for example,  where the bracing near the bridge plate is too close. Shipping now!

A3.2 to Rise Again as Model A3

June 16th, 2007

Due to customer demand, B-Band will again produce the ever popular A3.2. The new preamp will have the new model number A3. The A3 will have same specifications as the A3.2. The A3 is in production now as a OEM product only- for manufacturers only. An A3 packaged distribution model for dealers will be in production in the autumn 2007- release dates to be announced later. Pictures and text for A3 will follow soon.

A2 Preamp Production Halted for Revision

June 16th, 2007

The A2 preamp has been one of the most popular mainstays of the B-Band range. The separate dual input / dual output endpin preamp is useful in many ways. In order to do a proper redesign, B-Band will stop production and will resume with the updated model sometime in the autumn / winter of 2007- release dates to be announced later. The updated features will make the new A2 something of a "Swiss army knife" preamp.

Terry Bozzio Endorses B-Band DM Drum Contact Mics

March 16th, 2007

Legendary drummer Terry Bozzio (Korn; Zappa Plays Zappa; Frank Zappa; Missing Persons and more) has taken the B-Band DM drum contact mics on the road.

Terry says: "I've been searching for a solution to the problem of mic'ing my chromatic bank of piccolo toms in a loud rock band situation for years now, these B-Band contact mic's are the answer!"

"My chromatic piccolo tom bank provides unique mic'ing problems in loud, live conditions. Individual close-mic'ing from above is impossible because of the drumstick path over the clustering of the setup. Mic'ing from below is not as desirable sound-wise and still has leakage problems.

"With the b-band contact mic's I have a solution that is clean and effective. With the individual preamps it is possible to cater to the extreme range of the individual notes that the drums are tuned to.

B-Band on Schoen Turbo Diddley

August 8th, 2006

B-Band is offered as the only pickup option on Schoen Turbo Diddley guitars, often referred to as cigar box guitars. Each Schoen instrument is unique in that all have box-shaped bodies made from recycled materials. Materials include reclaimed aged hardwood and softwood building lumber, reclaimed wood from the wine and liquor industry, manufacturing scrap, and cabinet maker's surplus cutoffs. Of course, cigar boxes are used as well! We recently installed A1 preamp and 15M AST on Billy Gibbons' Schoen.

B-Band Frankfurt 2005 Musikmesse Wrap Up

April 14, 2005

We had two separate booths this year, one for the guitar, bass and violin systems. The second booth was for our new Drum Mic Systems. Many drummers, drum manufacturers and drum dealers were blown away by the way the DM systems sound.

At the guitar booth we had few artists as well doing demos and performances. Bent Heitzler played with David Becker, Ulli Bogershausen did solo performances, and Hans Hermann played his Stick equipped with B-Band system. We introduced the retrofit series preamps A7, A8, A9 and A10 that everyone has been waiting for.

David Becker just released an album he recorded with Joe Diorio. We did an interview with David, look for it in the interviews section of our page.

We had a german drummer Rolf Kilchling demoing the DM systems. He played his set with dymanic mics, B-Band DM without overheads and with overheads. Also he played with a bass player Bendt Heitzler and some +one tapes so we could really hear how the DM system sounds in action. Everyone agreed that the DM system sounded more natural, more dynamic and clearer than regular dynamic mic set. It also sits well with the mix when played with a bass player or a full band. Some sound engineers mentioned that they could leave the gates out when using DM systems since there is no bleed between the drums.

The A7, A8, A9 and A10 preamps are the perfect direct drop-in replacement for common old outdated preamps. Check out the 2005 catalog.

Since the release of the 1470 AST (Acoustic Soundboard Transducer) there has been considerable interest about its use with classical and flamenco guitars.

Originally designed for guitars with a bridge plate, the 1470 AST has now proven to work in classical and flamenco guitars too. All B-Band UST and AST transducers and preamps are compatible with classical and flamenco guitars.

Recent revelations in our R&D department and reports from testers around the world have proved that the placement of the 1470 AST can be in a different area than where it would be placed for guitars with a bridge plate.

For classical and flamenco guitars, placement of the 1470 AST can be parallel to the bracing close to the bridge area. Place the transducer parallel to the braces, in-between the bridge area and soundhole, at the soundboard underneath the "G" and "D" strings (inside the guitar).

Systems With Low Output Reported

1 September 2002

We have had some reports of B-Band systems with low output. Though this has been a rare occurrence, there have been enough reports to warrant information to be posted.

If you have come to this page, we assume that you already have a B-Band product. We thank you very much for your patronage.

The following will explain the aspects of having a quality output level with a B-Band system.

All of the components that make up a B-Band system are of the highest quality. Over the past years we have had an extremely high success rate of quality-reported defects are less than 0.5 %!

If you are experiencing, what you think could be, low output from a B-Band system, the first thing that should be checked is the equipment you are using with the B-Band. It may be something other than the B-Band system itself. It is important that all the equipment is in good condition and that it is set up properly. Many times a simple adjustment is causing the low output, for example - not having the input gain set properly at the input of a mixer or amplifier. It also could be the condition of the hardware that interfaces the B-Band system to sound system, for example - a bad cable. If you are satisfied that your set up is correctly tuned and is in good condition then check the B-Band system itself.

Check the battery. If the battery is low replace it with a fresh one. Check the expiration date to be sure. Use a high quality battery, it may cost a little more but for reliability and lasting power it's worth it.

A2, A4, NF2 and Core99 preamps have special onboard input and output gain controls that if set properly will enhance the output. The A2 and Core99 preamps each have four mini switches inside on the circuit board. The A2 has one switch for a treble boost, one for voltage bias, a bass roll off switch and a switch for input gain control. At the Core99 there are two switches for hi and low pass filters for general tone control, a bass roll-off control, and a low / hi output switch. Please check the instruction manual for A2 or Core99 for more information on how to use these.

A4 and NF2 preamps have input gain and bass roll-off controls. These are accessible with a small screwdriver through the back cover of the preamp. The A4 has two input gain controls, one for the UST and one for the AST. To set up, at first set the balance control at 6/6 (center) and make sure the main volume control is at a low setting but on so you can hear them. Set both input gain controls at full. Then the louder of the two inputs (you can check this by moving the balance control to the left and right) should be turned down to obtain the best balance. The NF2 has an input gain control for channel 2 (normally the AG-MIC channel) and a bass roll-off control. The gain should be set to full to start then turned down to set the balance with the UST. Set the bass roll-off at the highest point then after setting the gain, set the roll-off to taste. Please check the instruction manual for A4 or NF2 for more information on how to use these.

If you are still experiencing low output after these inspections and procedures, it may be possible that you have a defective IC (op-amp) component in the preamp itself. In some very rare cases the transducer may be defective. These are defects that are covered by our twelve-month warranty to the original purchaser.

We want that your experience with B-Band products to be both professional and pleasurable.

New B-Band Products, Upgrades and Model Numbers to be Announced at Winter NAMM 2002 in Anaheim, January 12-20th, Booth #1314 Hall E

11 January 2002

Introducing the new B-Band 1470 AST (Acoustic Soundboard Transducer). This new AST has been redeveloped with an improvement of the AST's own resonance frequency making for a unprecedented natural acoustic sound, even at high volume levels. A bigger pickup surface, 14mm X 70mm, also relates to the new model number. The new model 1470 AST will work with all B-Band preamps.

The updated B-Band UST (undersaddle transducer), designated as the "4th Gen UST", has improved string balance, sound quality, and durability. All UST model numbers remain the same.

B-Band's all new A1 acoustic guitar preamp's electronics are based on the B-Band Core99 endpin preamps. The unobtrusive A1 is a single input endpin preamp with direct frequency response and 20 dB of gain, built into a small tube housing that is one piece with the output jack. UST or AST transducers can be used with the A1.

The B-Band A2 is a significantly changed Core99 endpin preamp, the original of the B-Band range. The two input A2 allows for an UST / AST combination: a new way for all of the instruments nuances to be reproduced.

The A5 is the new flagship of B-Band onboard side-mount preamps. Raised from the beginning to give guitarists everything they need from their fingertips to their ears. The A5 provides two inputs, one for UST and one for AST, with individual gain controls at the front plate. Slide controls are used for the three-band EQ, UST / AST mix control and volume. The rotary Notch Depth and Notch Frequency controls are for feedback suppression. There is also a push-button phase control and a battery low LED indicator. A two-way output provides both mono mix and a separate AST signal.

The A4 is an upgrade of the New2 Frontier preamp. The A4 is a two input preamp for a UST / AST combination with on-board mix control and the B-Band exclusive two-band sound enhancer.

The B-Band A3 is an updated version of the 3Tone preamp. The A3's 3-band EQ's mid and treble controls affect higher frequencies more than before and also feature linear potentiometers for greater range. The A3 will accept either UST or AST transducers. B-Band AST (Acoustic Soundboard Transducer)

2001

B-Band has again come up with a novel and great sounding product. A breakthrough with B-Band transducer technology has made possible the use of B-Band's exclusive electret film as an acoustic soundboard transducer (AST).

The B-Band* AST's delivered sound is very microphone-like. It is highly defined and balanced capturing the wood of the instrument without sounding boxy or being overly prone to feedback. Its round active area attaches with harmless putty to the guitar's bridge plate or top. This makes installation very easy and quick. String balance is always even.

Like the B-Band under saddle transducers, the AST is an ultra thin, flexible and rugged constant sandwich structure all the way to the preamp. Connection to the preamp is an easy "plug in" without soldering. (* patented, patents pending)
